Funding, Ecosystem Protection, Climate Change Adaptation;
The Special Climate Change Fund (SCCF) was established in 2001 under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and is managed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF). Its mission is to support developing countries in addressing the adverse effects of climate change, particularly through adaptation, innovation, and private sector engagement. The SCCF prioritizes support for Small Island Developing States (SIDS), which face heightened risks such as sea level rise, coastal erosion, and water scarcity.
Since inception, SCCF has financed over 100 projects with nearly US$400 million in grants, helping millions of people adapt through sustainable agriculture, water management, nature-based solutions, and coastal protection. The Fund fosters technology transfer, capacity-building, and climate-resilient livelihoods while requiring all projects to include monitoring, evaluation, and reporting of outcomes.
Eligible developing countries, including Caribbean states, can access SCCF through proposals aligned with its adaptation and resilience priorities. By strengthening ecosystems, infrastructure, and local communities, SCCF serves as a vital funding mechanism to help vulnerable nations build a climate-resilient future.
