Founded in 1973 by agronomist Chavannes Jean-Baptiste, the Papaye Peasant Movement (MPP) is Haiti’s largest grassroots peasant organization, with over 60,000 members across approximately 4,500 local groups. Based in the Central Plateau, MPP focuses on agroecology, reforestation, and community development to restore Haiti’s agricultural and ecological systems. MPP’s initiatives include: Agroecology & Sustainable Farming: Training farmers in organic, chemical-free agriculture, emphasizing soil regeneration and biodiversity. Reforestation: Planting over 50 million trees to combat deforestation, prevent soil erosion, and enhance climate resilience. Youth & Women’s Empowerment: Programs like the Jeunes Travailleurs Paysans (JTP) and the Women’s Movement of MPP focus on education, leadership, and gender equality. Community Health & Legal Aid: Providing healthcare services, legal education, and support to empower rural communities. Alternative Energy & Water Management: Implementing solar energy solutions and innovative water conservation techniques. MPP is also a founding member of La Via Campesina, a global peasant network, and has been instrumental in advocating for food sovereignty and climate justice. The movement’s slogan, “Òganizasyon ou lanmò” (Your organization or death), reflects its commitment to collective action and resilience.
