Past: The Cosmic Macajuel- Rehab of Earthen Walls - Trinidad

The Project

Where:

Freeport, Trinidad

When:

Sep 2024

Methods:

Plastering and Final Finishes

The Cosmic Macajuel CT at Wa Samaki was originally built in 2019 under the guidance of Fyto Sandavol. In 2024, the structure underwent wall rehabilitation during the Service Learning Program, where the walls were restored and protected using a lime-based plaster, extending the life of the building while maintaining breathability and durability.

Project Details

The Cosmic Macajuel Compost Toilet at Wa Samaki Permaculture was originally built in 2019 under the guidance of Fyto Sandavol and brought to completion as part of that year’s internship program.

The walls were initially finished with a clay and lime plaster. Over time, due to the structure’s location near a body of water and its surrounding tree cover, the walls were exposed to high moisture levels and condensation. This created conditions that encouraged mildew and mold growth, highlighting the challenges of maintaining earthen buildings in humid tropical environments.

To address this, a full wall rehabilitation was undertaken during the 2024 Service Learning Program. Students from the 2024 Earth Building Immersion (EBI) removed the existing plaster using metal brushes, revealing the primary structural surface. A new lime and sand plaster, pigmented with blue mineral tones, was then applied to both the interior and exterior walls. This lime-based finish is better suited to the humid conditions, improving breathability, durability, and long-term performance.

This project showcases the ongoing maintenance that earthen structures may require over time and serves as an important hands-on learning experience. Students gained practical knowledge in assessing moisture-related issues, selecting appropriate finishes, and caring for earthen walls throughout the life of a natural building.
