What Is ABV? ABV means alcohol by volume. A liquid that is 40% ABV contains approximately 40 mL of ethanol in every 100 mL of liquid.

How to Dilute Alcohol to a Desired ABV
Formula and Example Calculation
Fomula: Volume of starting alcohol needed = Desired ABV × Desired final volume ÷ Starting ABV
Step 1. Determine the desired final volume
Decide how much diluted alcohol you want to make. Example: 600 mL. You will combine a measured amount of your higher-ABV alcohol with enough water to reach this final volume. Adding water reduces the alcohol concentration to your desired ABV.
2. Calculate the volume of starting alcohol needed
Use the following proportion:
Desired ABV ÷ Starting ABV = Volume of starting alcohol needed ÷ Desired final volume.
Solve for the unknown value (x) using cross-multiplication.
Example:
50 ÷ 63 = X ÷ 600
Cross-multiply:
50 × 600 = 63 × X
30,000 = 63 × X
Divide both sides by 63:
X = 30,000 ÷ 63
X = approximately 476.2 mL
Therefore, you need approximately 476.2 mL of the 63% alcohol in your final 600 mL volume to achieve an ABV of 50%.
3. Calculate how much water to add
Subtract the volume of starting alcohol from the desired final volume:
Water to add = Desired final volume − Volume of starting alcohol used
Example:
600 mL − 476.2 mL = 123.8 mL
Therefore, combine:
476.2 mL of 63% alcohol + 123.8 mL of water
This gives approximately 600 mL of alcohol at 50% ABV.
