Explore the Art and Science of Natural Plasters and Paints. This hands-on experience will focus learning how natural finishes protect, strengthen, and enhance earthen structures.
Learn to create eco-friendly, non-synthetic plasters and paints using natural materials such as lime, clay, sand, and plant-based additives.
What will we do?
Learn how to mix and apply lime plasters, lime-based paints, and clay-based paints to earthen and conventional structures
Understand material ratios and how to adjust recipes for different conditions
Create natural pigments and coloured finishes from simple ingredients
Techniques for sealing and waterproofing, including polished lime-plasters for wet areas
Plaster an outdoor rocket stove
Methods for preparing surfaces and applying base and finish coats

What are Natural Plasters and Paints?
Natural plasters and paints are finishes made from earth-based and non-toxic materials such as clay, lime, sand, and natural pigments. Unlike synthetic coatings, they are breathable, allowing moisture to move through surfaces, which helps regulate humidity and prevent mold.
Used for both protection and aesthetics, natural plasters and paints create durable, healthy finishes that enhance indoor air quality while connecting buildings more closely to the natural environment.

Course Details
Where
Durga's Den is a ecological farm and guesthouse located in St. Ann, Jamaica (about 20 minutes from Ocho Rios). The site practices and demonstrates permaculture techniques and natural building. Accommodation is available on-site. See details below for accommodation options.

$15,000 JMD / $95 USD
How to Join:
Register and make your payment. Payment is needed to secure your spot. We have two payment options:
Pay in full
Pay in 2 installments: 50% deposit + 50% balance by the start of the course
How to Pay:
Pay online using your card (all major debit and credit cards accepted)
Pay via bank transfer (both Jamaican and international).
Pay in cash. Make a deposit at our bank or contact us to arrange payment.
*If paying via bank transfer or cash deposit, our payments page has our banking information and more details, once you register. We'll hold your spot for 2 days to allow your transfer to reach us. After that, we may release your spot if we haven't received it .

Is there food?
We will provide light refreshments throughout the day. You are welcome to bring any food you need. There are a few cookshops and stores close to the site. And additional food options in Ocho Rios (about 20 minutes away)
Food for purchase: Food will be available for purchase via a local caterer. We'll take orders the day before. Cost $1500 JMD (Vegertarian)
Accommodation
You will have the option to stay on-site at Durga’s Den, enjoying a comfortable and cozy environment with beautiful views of the surrounding farm. Accommodation options include:
Shared Cottages — $20 USD per person (per night)
Private Rooms — $40 USD per person (per night)
Camping on Site — $15 USD per person (per night)
All private rooms are equipped with a composting toilet and sink, while shared cottage guests have access to nearby composting toilets. Showers are separate, offering a refreshing, nature-connected experience. A small fridge and kitchenette are available for your use.
Check-in: Morning of the course start date (preferred)
Check-out: By 11:00 AM the day after the course ends
Stay immersed in the landscape and enjoy a simple, peaceful living experience that complements the learning journey.
Clothing and environment
Expect to get a little dirty. We plan to spend time both outside and under shelter. We will use our bodies to mix earth. Please have clothing suitable for working outside. The environment is generally warm and sunny. It may also rain. You may bring a change of clothes if you prefer to have clean clothes.
How do I get there?
You can navigate to Durga's Den using Google Maps or other navigation apps. It is located in Ocho Rios. Contact us if you need directions.
It's a diverse space
We're interested in creating friendly and diverse spaces. That includes diversity in gender, race, religion, sexuality, economic status, and other features. We expect everyone to respect each other. If you are unable to share space with people different from you, do not register.
Are there payment plans? I need more time to pay
If you need more time to pay, ask us for a payment plan and propose a timeline for payment. We are very accommodating of reasonable proposals. You will still need to pay a 50% deposit and settle balance in a reasonable time (no more than 1 month after).
Refund Policy
Generally, registration fees are not refundable unless we cancel the event.
If we cancel the event: you receive a full refund.
If you cancel: we can consider a refund in certain cases. We determine a fair refund amount using the guidelines below.
If you cancel:
more than 1 month before the event: up to a 100% refund (minus processing fees)
within 1-month before the event: up to a 60-70% refund (minus processing fees)
Within 1-week of the event: up to a 40% refund (minus processing fees)
