what is Earth Building?

The art and science of creating structures and items using materials available in your ecosystem, chiefly soils.  It includes modern and ancient techniques to create buildings, furniture, and items for life using local resources that take into account the wellbeing of the planet.

Where

Cafe Rosa - an cozy multi-cultural cafe and garden space in Kingston. The Cafe is a relaxing green space in Manor Park that allows us ample space to be both inside and outside during this short course.

Topics Covered

Day 1 - Earth Building Techniques and Materials

• Learn about ancient and modern techniques from around the world such as Cob, Adobe, Wattle and Daub, Earthbag and more

• Explore the main materials used in earth building (clay, sand, fibers, lime) and their structural qualities. We will experience the materials both physically and conceptually.

• Practice creating mixes for endless possibilities in construction and artistry. We will mix as a group to develop the skill and 'feel' for the process.

• Make Adobe bricks. We will make bricks together to be air-dried

Day 2 - Earthen Plasters, Paints, and Artistry

• Make a miniature earthen structure as a group using Adobe bricks

• Make natural plasters / paints. Practice refining materials to create natural finishes that replace industrial paints. Learn reliable plaster recipers then express yourself by creating your own unique plaster/paint.

• Practice plastering technique on a small surface.

Food

Food is available for purchase from Cafe Rosa. You can pre-purchase lunch for $1,500 during your registration or afterwards.
